Drink Rosé at North Fork Wineries

Say what you will about New York wines, but there are some great rosés being made in North Fork these days. Long Island’s second wine appellation was created here in 1985, a year after The Hamptons earned its designation, and today hosts more wineries than its glitzy southern siblings, and a rural setting that favors low-key, farm-fresh cuisine to boot. You can easily visit three wineries and enjoy a memorable lunch on a tipsy day trip from New York City or, turn your vineyard adventure into a fun overnight by bedding down at a classy North Fork hotel.

Roanoke Vineyards

The first stop on the fork, this boutique Riverhead winery is run by the same vineyard manager and wine maker from East Hampton’s Wölffer Estates. Roanoake produces fewer than 2,000 cases a year, only sells its wines online, and can’t be found in New York restaurants or wine shops. The Weekend White Wine Tasting Flight is a great introduction to the region's expertise and includes an off-dry rosé with raspberry and citrus notes.

Shinn Estate Vineyard

This sustainable vineyard in rural Mattituck actually produces some of North Fork’s most diverse wines. You’ll find 10 choices here, including the wittily named Wild Boar Doe, based on Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier, and even Malbec. Their bone-dry rosé bursts with floral, strawberry, raspberry, and watermelon notes (and can now be found at several NYC stores).

Croteaux Vineyards

If you only make it to one vineyard, make it Croteaux, a darling local winemaker that focuses so exclusively on pink wines that its tagline touts “rosé on purpose.” The result is three gorgeously drinkable 100% Merlot options made with French wine-making techniques and sold in exceptionally pretty bottles. You can sample the lot, and Croteaux's new bubbly that combines all three, in the winery's cozy 18th-century hand-hewn oak barn.

North Fork Table and Inn

Lunch at this whitewashed Southold inn is not to be missed and you should plan to start or end your day here. Chef Gerry Hayden, of Aureole fame, and his wife, James Beard–award-winning Pastry Chef Claudia Fleming, formerly of Gramercy Tavern, decamped here from Manhattan a few years ago and now deliver the region’s best three-course lunch based on seasonal local produce, fine wines, and decadent dessert. It’s also a downright steal, at half the price of the inn’s five-course dinner menu. Be sure to reserve in advance.

Shinn Estate Farmhouse

Oenophiles who want to sleep amidst the vines should reserve one of the four elegant rooms at this North Fork vineyard inn. Queen-sized beds, hardwood floors, flat-screen TVs, and comfortable sitting areas come standard; two also feature four-poster beds, and one has prime sunset views from its Jacuzzi tub. Breakfast is included in the rates and served in a historic wood-paneled dining room.

North Fork Table and Inn

Should you fancy a siesta after lunch, book one of the understated rooms above the inn’s fine restaurant. All four come with queen-sized sleigh bed, crisp white Frette linens, and mod-cons like flat-panel TVs (with DVD library) and Wi-Fi, plus a sumptuous breakfast prepared by the inn’s James Beard–award-winning chef the next morning.

The Greenporter

Away from the vineyards, in North Fork’s only real town of note, this updated 1950s motel lacks the charm of other area hotels, but compensates with a heated pool, lively wine bistro, close (walkable) proximity to Greenport’s laid-back shops and restaurants, and cheaper rates.
